Don Hutchings opened Edmonton’s first Foam King in 1996. He was an upholsterer for 15 years before he found his Foam Kingdom.

“As an upholsterer, I saw the difference quality foam made in the comfort level and lifespan of a piece of furniture” said Hutchings. “Simply replacing the foam in couch or chair cushions can prevent back and neck pain because it restores the piece’s ability to support the body properly. I thought if foam can make that much difference in a chair, what could it do for a mattress?”

That thought led Hutchings to try his first foam mattress, and now he wouldn’t sleep on anything else. Aches and pains he had chalked up to “getting older” disappeared, and he found himself sleeping better than he had in years.

“One of my friends has suffered from chronic osteo-arthritis since he was in his early twenties and told me that he figured waking up stiff and sore was just a fact of life,” recalls Hutchings. “After visiting our home and sleeping on a foam mattress, he was sold. He and his wife bought themselves a foam mattress and he hasn’t woken up sore since.”

“My daughter originally christened me the “Foam King”. It started out as a family nickname when I was deciding on what to call the business, and it stuck,” said Hutchings.
